Hazy summer fails to deter regional forum

A major international conference with climate change on its agenda is going ahead in Canberra despite hazardous levels of smoke from nearby bushfires.

About 350 delegates from 30 countries will gather at Parliament House on Monday for the 28th Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum.

Delegates have been told of the decline in Canberra's air quality but reassured Parliament House has air filtering in place.

A range of issues from climate change and global security to economics, trade and regional cooperation will be discussed.

Australia is sponsoring a resolution calling on APPF members to strengthen efforts to tackle climate change.

It calls for a reaffirmation of the need to "reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to limit any temperature increase to well below two degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels".

"(We) call upon Asia-Pacific parliamentarians to speed up legislative efforts to initiate climate legislation and regulatory reform in accordance with the UNFCCC, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement," the motion reads in part.
