Harris could lose Australian awards

Rolf Harris could be stripped of his Order of Australia awards after being convicted of sexual abuse.

The 84-year-old entertainer was convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault against four girls - one as young as seven or eight.

He is likely to be jailed at his sentencing on Friday.

Harris was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2012 for distinguished service to arts, charitable organisations and international relations.

He also became a Member of the Order of Australia in 1989, received the Centenary Medal in 2001 and has two levels of awards under the Order of the British Empire.

The governor-general can strip recipients of their awards if they've been convicted of a crime under Australian or foreign law.

But a spokeswoman for Government House told AAP they wouldn't comment on individual cases of possible or actual honours cancellations.

The Order of Australia council considers cases brought to its attention and can recommend cancellations to the governor-general.
