Hanson doubles down on burqa ban

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has reiterated her call for a ban on burqas and any other "full face coverings" in public following an arrest in Melbourne.

Melbourne detectives have charged a man, and a woman is assisting with enquiries, after a fast-food outlet was allegedly robbed in Croydon on Saturday afternoon.

It is alleged the armed robbery involved a person wearing a head covering, which police described as "similar to a niqab or burqa".

A 38-year-old Frankston man has been charged with armed robbery and other related offences, and has been remanded in custody to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.

Senator Hanson, who stunned parliament last week by wearing part of a burqa she bought online into the Senate chamber, told reporters in Brisbane on Wednesday the incident showed why the garment should be banned in Australia.

"Because our laws allow them to wear the burqa in public places, it gives them more opportunity to actually go undetected, not challenged, not asked for verification," she said.

Attorney-General George Brandis last week cautioned Senator Hanson over offending Muslims, the vast majority of whom he said were "law-abiding good Australians".
