Weatherzone senior meteorologist Cobus Cronje told 9NEWS the cold front would bring rain to Melbourne for most of this afternoon.

"For the next few hours it will be a bit gusty and showery, and it should stick around until the early evening," he said.

"Storms are tracking into central and eastern Victoria and southern New South Wales and potentiall reaching the ACT."

The weird weather has delighted some Melbourne residents, who have have marveled at their city's propensity for wild swings in conditions.

The same hot to cold conditions have resulted in temperatures of up to 35 degrees in Sydney, which will soon see the mercury drop by up to 15 degrees by late afternoon.
