British filmmaker Guy Ritchie is reportedly in talks to direct a live-action version of Disney’s animated classic, Aladdin.

Mr Ritchie, 48, is negotiating a deal with Walt Disney Studious to helm an “ambitious and non-traditional” version of the 1992 film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The director is known for the popular Sherlock Holmes film series as well as gritty crime films such as Snatch and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Dan Lin, who produced Mr Ritchie’s two Sherlock Holmes movies for Warner Bros will also produce Aladdin through his Lin Pictures company.

Aladdin will mark Mr Ritchie’s first foray into children’s features, an area he became “interested” in after the birth of his first child with Madonna, Rocco.

"As I get more and more involved in the child's world with Rocco, I'm getting interested in making a film for children," he told Hollywood Life in 2010.

The original Aladdin film won two Oscars and featured the voice of the late Robin Williams as the larger-than-life Genie.

A musical version of the film was debuted on Broadway in 2014 and arrived at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre this month.
