'Gustnado' captured on camera in Queensland's Darling Downs region

A Queenslander has captured footage of a tornado-like weather phenomenon dubbed a "gustnado" in a field in Darling Downs.

The video, shared by the Facebook page Higgins Storm Chasing, has gone viral overnight with over 90,000 views on Facebook.

Social media blew up with people sharing and commenting on the video following the severe thunderstorms.

One person was quick to draw parallels to the 2013 flop, Sharknado.

The Bureau of Meterology says dustnados are a "brief, intense vortex that form on the leading edge of gust fronts".

Jonty Hall, a BoM senior forecaster, told ABC News the dustnados can be hard to spot.

"This one was very visible because it was over a bare earth field so it lifted a lot of dirt and dust into the air," he said.

Mr Hall said that they're not very strong when compared with a tornado.

"They can be strong enough to do some minor damage by usually [they're] nothing worse than gusty winds from the line of storms themselves," he said.
