Gunnedah homes evacuated over gas leak

Homes and businesses have been evacuated in Gunnedah, in northern NSW, as emergency services work to contain a high-pressure gas leak.

A gas tank at a service station at the corner of Tempest Street and Little Barber Street was reported about 11am (AEDT) on Wednesday.

Police say both streets have been closed to all traffic and a number of nearby businesses and residences have been evacuated as a precaution.

The operation to contain the leak is expected to last into the evening and locals have been urged to avoid the area.
