A NSW man has formally pleaded guilty to murdering a young woman whose body was found dumped on the banks of a river in the Hunter region.

The body of 23-year-old Clare Weston was discovered lying by the Hunter River at Aberglasslyn on a Sunday morning in March last year.

On Friday, George Robert Ballantyne, from Greta near Maitland, formally admitted to the murder in the NSW Supreme Court.

"I plead guilty, your honour," Ballantyne, 31, told the court during a brief arraignment.

He will face a sentencing hearing on August 22.
