Truckie accused of historic rapes denied bail

A tow truck driver accused of abusing 14 women has made an unsuccessful bid to keep his name out of the media.

Gregory John Richardson, 51, is accused of carrying out the offences between 1989 and 2013.

He was arrested in Epping in Sydney's north-west yesterday when police raided two homes in the suburb, along with a storage shed in Berrilee.

Police claim that after news broke of Mr Richardson's arrest, some more people came forward with more information.

Mr Richardson did not appear in court today, but asked the magistrate to stop the publication of his name.

His lawyer Dean Bainbridge said Mr Richardson "certainly understands" the nature of the allegations against him.

"But he's entitled to the presumption of innocence and that's the point where we'll be taking the case from," Mr Bainbridge said.

Mr Richardson was formally denied bail, but indicated he would apply for release when he returns to court later this month.
