Greens volunteer bitten in violent Melbourne scuffle

A Greens volunteer in Melbourne has been attacked while sitting in her car after an argument with suspected Liberal party supporters turned violent, it has been claimed.

Police are investigating allegations a woman, 48, was left with bite marks to her hand after being involved in a scuffle with a man in his 60s outside Armadale Public School overnight, The Age reports.

The woman claims she was approached by two men who took issue with the Greens political paraphernalia posted in the hotly contested seat of Higgins. When the men became aggressive, the woman attempted to take their photo with her mobile phone, causing one of the men to attack her.  

“Two men approached us in the car, upset the Greens had put posters and other things up – we’re talking the heartland of Liberaldom here,” Stonnington Greens branch co-treasurer and witness to the incident, Michael McCormack, told the newspaper.

“I wound down the window and they got aggressive. We had been advised that if we felt threatened by people we should take their photo. My fellow Green took out her phone to do that and the guy reached across me and grabbed her and was trying to pull her phone away.”

A Victoria Police spokeswoman told The Age a struggle took place, with the woman allegedly bitten on the hand. The two men are said to have driven off in a white SUV following the incident.

Assistant treasurer Kelly O’Dwyer is battling for the seat of Higgins with Greens candidate Jason Ball.

No arrests have been made, with the investigation ongoing.
