Greens to retable food labelling bill

Consumers would be able to better identify which country their food comes from under a proposal from the Australian Greens.

The Greens will reintroduce a mandatory labelling bill when federal parliament resumes in February.

The bill would scrap the term "made in" - which the party believes misleads consumers to think the ingredients were grown in that country - and introduce "manufactured in".

It will also prohibit terms like "made from local and imported ingredients".

"Everyone wants to support our farmers and workers by buying local products but our current labelling is too confusing," Greens leader Christine Milne said.

"This should be a no brainer."
