The number of registered guns in NSW is projected to surpass one million by 2020, the NSW Greens say.

The party has obtained figures from the Police Firearms Registry showing that the number of registered guns in NSW has jumped from more than 850,000 in May 2015 to almost 916,000 in March this year.

"If the increase in gun ownership continues, NSW is on track to have more than one million registered guns by 2020," a party statement said on Saturday.

"There are 8 private individuals in NSW who each have more than 200 guns a piece with one person owning 312 guns," Greens MP David Shoebridge said.

"These aren't collectors or dealers they are just private people with what are, in effect, private arsenals."

The government was contacted for comment.
