Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young hails defamation win over men's magazine as 'stand against sexism'

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young is pleased her daughter will know she stood up to men's magazine ZOO Weekly after it photoshopped her head onto the body of a lingerie-clad model.

The senator has won her defamation case against the Bauer Media publication in the NSW Supreme Court.

In 2012 it carried an article saying it would "house the next boatload of asylum seekers in the ZOO office" if the Greens' immigration spokeswoman would agree to a "tasteful" bikini or lingerie photo shoot.

Senator Hanson-Young is glad the matter is now resolved, saying there is no place for the degradation of women.

"As a mother it is a huge concern that my own daughter can Google my name and find images of my face photoshopped onto the body of a near-naked woman," she said in a statement.

"Young women need to see their female leaders taking a stand against sexism.

"My daughter needs to know I did."

The court made no order on costs.

As part of an agreement, ZOO Weekly has apologised to the senator on its website for any hurt caused.

"We accept that the article was in poor taste," it says.

"Senator Hanson-Young has made a significant contribution to asylum seeker policy in this country."
