Greens pledge extra shark research dollars

The Greens would throw more money into shark research as part of a policy to protect marine ecosystems.

The minor party is using World Oceans Day to reveal its marine package, which includes $6 million for research into key shark species and $66 million to reinstate management plans for marine reserves.

A further $69.5 million in compensation will be provided for displaced fisheries.

The package also includes:

* $8 million for extra coral bleaching research

* $2 million to protect sharks from finning

* Mandatory country of origin seafood labelling

* Banning super trawlers.

The party says the extra dollars for shark research will support tagging programs and satellite monitoring.

"If we are going to develop the strongest non-lethal shark mitigation strategies we need to understand sharks as best as possible," it said ahead of the announcement.

"We can keep ocean users safe without culling an apex predator that is essential to marine ecosystem health; the more we know about sharks the better."

The Abbott government scrapped management plans for marine parks in 2013, announcing a review of the system.
