Feeney revelations distract Labor

More questions about frontbencher David Feeney threaten to distract attention from Labor's biggest spending commitment of the election campaign so far.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten on Thursday will formally announce a promise to end the coalition's six-year freeze on indexed increases to the Medicare rebate at a $12 billion cost to the budget over 10 years.

But he faces more questions about the property interests of Mr Feeney, Labor's junior defence spokesman.

The Australian says while he's in Canberra the MP claims a nightly $270 travel allowance to stay at an apartment owned by his wife Liberty Sanger through a family trust.

The property is not specifically listed on his return in the parliamentary register of interests, although the trust is declared.

Mr Feeney admitted on Wednesday he had failed to declare a $2.3 million negatively-geared property in Northcote, in his Melbourne seat of Batman.

In an embarrassing twist his tenants have erected a placard for Greens candidate Alex Bhathal.

One of them told The Age newspaper the Greens approached the four housemates to erect the sign after the story broke.

"Hopefully (Mr Feeney) doesn't mind too much," Cam Spurr said.
