Greens call for Parakeelia investigation

The Greens have called for an investigation of links between the Liberal Party and one of its major donors, software company Parakeelia.

Greens senator Lee Rhiannon said she had written to the Australian Electoral Commission and the Department of Finance.

She's requesting they examine activities of the firm to which Liberal MPs pay $2500 a year in allowances for use of its feedback software.

The company has donated more than $1 million to the Liberal Party in the past three years.

Senator Rhiannon said she had asked the AEC whether this amounted to a violation of the laws governing associated entities and payments from associated entities to political parties.

"If Parakeelia is found to be a conduit for parliamentary allowances to be channelled into the Liberal Party then that is a serious rort of public money," she said in a statement.

Senator Rhiannon said she had asked the Finance Department whether payment of allowances and reimbursements for this software contravened the relevant guidelines.

"The Liberal Party may have found a way to launder parliamentary software allowances into donations to their party," she said.
