Major manhunt after shots fired at teenager metres from children in suburban park

A manhunt is underway for a gunman who targeted a teenager just metres from children playing Oztag at a park in Sydney's south-west.

Panic erupted at Roberts Park in Greenacre as several shots were fired towards the 19-year-old's car on Napolean Road just after 9pm yesterday.

Players dropped to the ground and ducked for cover when the shots rang out, as more than 100 people played touch football nearby.

"They started grabbing their bags and running," player Sibarasan Sooriakumar told 9NEWS.

"It was scary to know that it was pretty much close to us … I'd never heard gunshots in real life."

When officers arrived, there was no victim or gunman to be found.

“It’s very serious… and the consequences of a stray bullet, well words can’t describe them,” Chief Inspector Jeffrey Hohnen said today.

The only evidence left behind was bullet casings littered across the ground.

A white or cream sedan was also seen taking off, immediately after the gunfire.

Police believe the gunman dumped his getaway car that was found torched in Bankstown hours later.

Security vision, obtained exclusively by 9NEWS, shows two men driving up Northam Avenue in the nearby surburb in separate cars.

They can be seen exiting the cars before lighting the first car - a Mitsubishi Lancer - on fire.

The pair return to the second car – a white Ute - before reversing out of the street and speeding from the firebombing.

Residents told 9NEWS they were woken up by loud bangs, beeping horns and flames.

"The car was on fire from the top, from the sides …. everything," witness Jacinta Haikal said.

"I have never seen a car like it before."

At the time of the incident, more than 100 people at Roberts Park ducked for cover but none of the touch football games were called off.

The 19-year-old was uninjured in the shooting and has spent today being interviewed by police.

His bullet-riddled car was this afternoon found on Sir Joseph Banks street in Bankstown.

It remains unclear why he was targeted.
