Australia's renewable energy industry is going backwards, bucking the international boom, the Climate Council warns.

A report from the council, released on Monday, finds that despite a worldwide boom in renewable energy, investment in Australian large-scale projects dropped by 88 per cent over the past year and the sector lost 13 per cent of its jobs.

Council spokesman Tim Flannery says countries with clear, consistent and long-term energy policies are attracting substantial private investments, contrasting with policy uncertainty in Australia.
