A grassfire that threatened homes in Bracken Ridge, in Brisbane's north, is believed to have been deliberately lit.

The fire started in scrub near a wooden sound barrier along the Gateway Motorway around 2.30pm AEST.

Fire crews worked to control the blaze as strong winds blew embers into nearby fences and homes.

Images from the 9NEWS chopper showed a cloud of smoke billowing above homes, as the blaze stretched along the border of a number of properties.

Residents were forced to use garden hoses to protect their homes.

9NEWS understands fire investigators have identified at least four possible points of ignition in the scrub.
