A grassfire has threatened the town of Maitland on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia.

The blaze broke out near Spencer Highway and Balgowan Road, north of the town.

The Country Fire Service had issued a bushfire warning earlier but now says the threat from the fire has reduced.

However, people are being reminded to take care as smoke will reduce visibility on the roads and there is a risk of trees and branches falling.

Earlier, the CFS advised residents to shelter in a solid building as the roads were considered unsafe to use.
