Grassfire burns south of Canberra

Twelve fire trucks have been deployed to an out-of-control grassfire burning south of Canberra.

The ACT Rural Fire Service said the fire had broken out close to Settlement Road, Pierces Creek, near the Cotter Dam, about 8pm (AEDT).

The flame height was between three metres and 10 metres.

It is burning in a southwesterly direction.

"The fire is approximately 750 metres by 400 metres in size and is out of control," a fire service spokesman said.

No property is under threat at present.

The fire service set the alert level at "advice", meaning there is no immediate danger, but people should stay updated.

The spokesman said foam tankers and a bulldozer were also on the scene.

Crews were trying to establish a containment line.
