'Felt the ground shake': Investigation into Adelaide train derailment under way

An investigation is under way into the derailment of a train that smashed through a buffer at the end of a track in Adelaide.

There were 20 passengers on board when the train derailed at Military Road about 6.30pm yesterday but no injuries were reported.

The National Rail Safety Regulator allowed regular services to resume along the city to Grange line today, despite the cause still being under investigation.

Tracy Christies lives opposite the track's end and told 9News she had never seen anything like it.

"I'm in this front bedroom and we just felt the ground shake," Christies said.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said an investigation into what went wrong was well under way.

"We're talking about carrying passengers, mass transit passengers across our city," Koutsantonis said.

"There are a lot of safety measures in place.

"I'm very pleased no one was injured and very pleased no one was on the footpath or in the way of that train when it came off those rail lines."

The train driver was tested for drugs and alcohol but was cleared.

Night trains terminated at Woodville while a crane hoisted the carriage back onto the tracks last night.
