A 90-year-old Melbourne grandfather has lost his independence after callous thieves stole his mobility scooter from a Thomastown supermarket carpark.

Maurizio Giusti was buying groceries at the IGA when his scooter was stolen about 4.30pm Saturday.

His daughter Donna Curzi said he was very upset by the theft.

“He’s been crying and doesn’t want to eat,” she said.

“He goes ‘my life is over because without that, I can’t do nothing’.”

Mr Giusti was forced to walk home when he realised the scooter was missing.

“What’s wrong with people? My scooter’s gone,” he told 9NEWS.

The stolen scooter is a blue Pathrider, and the Giusti family suspect it was pushed down the street because Mr Giusit took the key with him.

Ms Curzi slammed the thieves for the heartless act.

“They must be sick in the head,” she said.

The family hopes someone who saw the theft may be able to help police find the scooter.

“Just bring it back – my dad needs it,” Ms Curzi said.
