Grand Mufti should condemn terror: Dutton

The Grand Mufti of Australia needs to take a stronger stance and condemn the extremists who carried out the Paris terrorist attacks, says Immigration Minister Peter Dutton.

Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohammed said factors such as racism and Islamophobia needed to be addressed following the deadly attacks in the French capital.

But Mr Dutton said the religious leader needs to clarify his comments.

"These acts need to be condemned for what they are - they've been condemned by Muslim leaders around the world and they should be condemned here in Australia by the leadership ... as well," Mr Dutton told 2GB Radio on Tuesday.

"The opportunity is there today for the Grand Mufti to come out and clarify his comments and make it very clear that he condemns these acts of terrorism, these murderous acts, without reservation, as other leaders have done," Mr Dutton said.

"The Grand Mufti would do well to listen to what some of the moderate leaders had to say because they've remained the hope of the side, if we're to combat some of this wrong thinking within the community."

The Grand Mufti and the Australian National Imams Council said in a statement late on Sunday that current strategies to combat terrorism are not working.

"These recent incidents highlight the fact that current strategies to deal with the threat of terrorism are not working," Dr Mohammed said.
