Govt reviews trade training centres

Trade training centres will come under the spotlight of an independent reviewer.

It's the latest in a series of reviews the federal government has set up to examine various education initiatives started under Labor.

The program has cost taxpayers more than $1.4 billion since 2009, although the government scrapped all funding for as-yet-to-be-built trade training centres in December.

Industry has raised concerns with Assistant Education Minister Sussan Ley about inconsistency in the quality of training, qualifications and equipment offered by the centres.

The program was more focussed on building "flashy new buildings" rather than the quality of training delivered inside, she said in a statement on Friday.

Reviewer Patricia Scott will look at whether training offered at the centres in schools meets employer needs and helps fix skills shortages.

Submissions will be taken until August 1.
