Govt offers help to Vic bushfire victims

Victims of Victoria's weekend bushfires will be able to receive government disaster assistance.

Eligible households can receive up to $500 for each adult and $250 each child to cover emergency accommodation, food, clothing or personal items and counselling, the federal and Victorian governments have announced.

Emergency re-establishment assistance of up to $31,050 a household is also available to help with costs including clean-up, emergency accommodation, repairs, rebuilding and replacing damaged contents.

The emergency financial assistance will be available to areas in outer Melbourne, central, northern and northeast Victoria and Gippsland.

Victorian Bushfire Response Minister Kim Wells said authorities were continuing to assess the damage caused by the bushfires and he said if assistance was required in other communities, it would be extended to those locations.
