Govt cuts $1 billion in red tape

The federal government has laid claim to at least $1 billion in red tape cuts in 2016, but a report on how this has been achieved has been pushed back until after June.

A report was due to be released in March but the Office of Best Practice Regulation has decided to change the report to a financial year basis.

A Senate estimates committee was told on Monday the government's target of a $1 billion cut in red tape had been achieved.

In December 2013, the government promised to release a total figure on red tape cuts within three years.

But the figure has not yet been released.

Asked about the delay, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet deputy secretary Steven Kennedy said no decision had been made on how to assess the cost savings.
