Govt blames Labor for ACT NDIS woes

Australian Capital Territory residents concerned they'll miss out on the national disability insurance scheme are being told to wait until after local elections for an outcome.

There are concerns the scheme is full in the territory and people are being turned away.

Social Services Minister Christian Porter has laid the blame on the previous federal Labor and ACT governments for underestimating the number of those eligible for the scheme.

He said the bilateral agreement in 2012 was for 5075 participants, a figure provided by the ACT government, even though it knew of larger estimates provided by the Australian government actuary.

"The NDIS is not a capped program and so following the ACT election, governments will agree arrangements for bringing in additional participants," he told AAP in a statement.

The territory election will be held on Saturday.

Mr Porter said there was no evidence to show the issue went beyond South Australia and the ACT.

"The underestimates appear limited to these jurisdictions which are small relative to the overall scheme."
