Governor-general receives abuse report

The governor-general has received the final report from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

The chair of the royal commission, Justice Peter McClellan, handed over the report to Sir Peter on Friday.

The 17-volume report is expected to contain more than 400 recommendations.

Criminal prosecutions have been launched against a string of alleged abusers during the course of the inquiry.

To avoid prejudicing court proceedings, two versions of the report have been submitted, one redacted and one unredacted.

"We recommend the redacted version be tabled and published. A further recommendation is that relevant parts of our final report be published in unredacted form at the conclusion of (court) proceedings," Justice McClellan said.

Sir Peter has dispatched the report to the federal government. It will be publicly released later on Friday.

"I thank you, commissioners, and all royal commission staff for their work," he said.

It follows the $500 million five-year inquiry into how government-run institutions, churches, charities and other organisations handled the sexual abuse of children.

Sir Peter earlier greeted a group of survivors gathered at the front gate of Government House.
