Governor-General homes cost $2.3m to fix

Taxpayers have forked out $2.3 million over the past year to fix Sir Peter Cosgrove's two official homes, including bird-proofing and asbestos removal.

The latest annual report of the office of the governor-general shows a new four-year property works program kicked off in 2015/16.

Major work at Government House in Canberra included "bird-proofing solutions", landscaping, car park improvements and repair of damaged heritage fabric.

At Sydney's Admiralty House, asbestos was removed, wiring replaced and gardens improved.

The report also showed $20 million worth of artworks were on loan including paintings, furniture and art objects.

Over the year, $180,489 was spent on consultants, out of the office's $14 million budget.
