Government books to improve: Treasurer

Australia's budget position for 2018/19 will be a "major improvement" on the $4.2 billion deficit forecast at the April budget, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says.

Mr Frydenberg and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann are due to release the final budget outcome in the next few weeks.

"It is a major improvement on ... the $4.2 billion deficit that was forecast at budget time," Mr Frydenberg told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.
