Goodes is good for Australia: Morrison

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has hailed the selection of Adam Goodes as Australian of the Year as a big win for Australia.

Goodes, a champion AFL player with the Sydney Swans, was named Australian of the Year on Saturday for his leadership and advocacy in the fight against racism, both on the sporting field and in society more broadly.

"It was a great win for Adam Goodes last night and a well deserved one," Mr Morrison said at a citizenship ceremony at Sydney's Darling Harbour on Sunday.

"We can say as passionate Sydneysiders here, another win for the Swans, but I think it was a very big win for Australia and I think for indigenous Australians as well."

"He is an incredible ambassador in so many respects, but mainly I think, first and foremost, as a great Australian."
