Gold Coast's free tip service under threat

The Gold Coast City Council is debating whether it should charge ratepayers for using the city's tip service, which is currently free.

The proposal, driven by rising costs and increasing financial pressure on the waste network and the increasing size of the city's landfill, has divided councillors.

The proposed charges include a $10 gate fee for cars and $25 for vehicles with trailers.

An alternative option involves a rate increase for all residents and voucher system.

However there are fears a fee will lead to an increase in illegal dumping.

"This is probably one of the biggest decisions we've made as a council," councillor Glenn Tozer said.

Councillor Dan Doran said more consultation with the community was needed.

"I don't think that we have appropriately taken the community on the journey," he said.

The council is also considering closing two waste centres in Currumbin and Numbinbah Valley due to low usage.
