Gold Coast swelters through spring heatwave

The Gold Coast is sweltering through a spring heatwave, with no rain predicted in the short-term forecast.

The mercury hit 28 degrees at the Seaway yesterday while Nerang and Coomera reached 29 degrees. The September average is 24 degrees.

Coastal suburbs were expected to reach 27 degrees today with hot gusty winds of up to 40km/h.

The conditions have promoted the Bureau of Meteorology to issue a fire weather warning for the south-east coast.

"A very dry air mass will combine with fresh to strong and gusty northwest to south-westerly winds over western and southern parts of the state to produce sever fire dangers," the Bureau said.

Last week dozens of firefighters spent days battling a large bushfire at Wongawallan, near Tamborine.

The warning comes after Queensland endured its hottest winter on record and well-below average rainfall totals.
