It was an ordeal that lasted only a minute, but terrified service station worker Andrew Hammond.

Shortly before 9pm last night, four men stormed a Freedom Fuel service station in Southport on the Gold Coast armed with golf clubs, a saw and an axe.

They jumped the counter, cut free two tills and grabbed tobacco pouches.

The men threatened Mr Hammond, who had fallen to the ground in fear, with a saw to the throat.

The 37-year-old had been working at the service station for a year and today told his boss he wants to return to work tonight.

The men remain on the run.
