Gold Coast roadside baby already a family legend

The Gold Coast mum whose baby was delivered by her husband on the side of the road en route to the hospital says he won't be living down his dramatic entrance into the world.

Baby Carter wasn't keen on waiting when his mum Brooke McDonald went into labour.

Her contractions were only 20 seconds apart when they made a quick dash to the Gold Coast University Hospital, so Ms McDonald knew her second child was on his way.

"I certainly wasn't expecting it – it wasn't in my birth plan," he said.

"I knew when we were in the car we weren't going to make it."

Two minutes after Carter came into the world with the help of his nervous dad and a triple zero operator, the ambulance arrived to take over.

But while dad Richie McDonald said it was a special way to welcome his son into the world, he was glad to have someone to talk him through it and tell him "exactly what to do."

"It wasn't much time at all," he said.

"It's not every day you get to deliver your own son."

Ms McDonald said she expected the story to come up before his 21st.

"I think he will hear about it every day for the rest of his life," she said.
