Family grappling with death of young man, killed wrestling with friend on street

Police will investigate why two men were wrestling before they tumbled onto the road where they were struck by a car.

Luke Hansen, 25, died at the scene in Elanora on the Gold Coast, while the other man, also 25, is in hospital with leg and pelvic injuries.

Police say the men were fighting when they fell into the path of a car at the intersection of Doubleview Drive and Attandale Street about 9pm yesterday.

Mr Hansen’s father and aunty visited the scene this morning.

9News understands the young man was planning to head to the mines in two weeks to embark on a new career.

“It’s just so sad,” Mr Hansen’s aunty Sharon Hansen said.

“Everybody loved him.

“I think everyone still is trying to grasp the whole thing and what actually happened here.”

Exactly why the men were wrestling remains unclear.

Paramedic Gary Berkowitz said the driver, 33, was "very shook up" but wasn't physically hurt.

The injured 25-year-old is being treated at Gold Coast University Hospital for head, leg and pelvic injuries as police investigations continue.
