Gold Coast school proposes two-shift system to reduce fees

Hillcrest Christian College on the Gold Coast is proposing a two-shift school day at its new Mudgeeraba campus.

The proposed schedule would divide the day into two sessions: 7.30am to midday, and 11am to 3.30pm.

The school is touting several benefits of the proposed system, including increased family flexibility, reduced exposure to peak-hour traffic, and the ability to tailor learning to individual student needs.

Administrators also claim the move will lead to lower school fees.

Principal Jeff Davis said the two-shift model aims to maximise resource utilisation and could save families $1500 a year.

"The concept that every child needs exactly the same thing is outdated" Davis said.

Davis said parents would initially be able to select a preferred shift for their children.

The school intends to initially offer the two-shift system to students in prep to year 2, with plans to construct the primary school first, followed by the high school.

The school hopes to have state government approvals in place by mid next year.
