Gold Coast to have 'best security in the world' during Commonwealth Games

The best security the world has ever seen has been promised to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games.

In an exclusive interview with 9NEWS, the head of security and counter-terrorism for the Games, Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski, revealed he had been working with British and US intelligence agencies to develop defence systems for all scenarios.

“Organisations like ISIS have proclaimed that violence should be done against Western communities like ours, so we're prepared for that,” Mr Gollschewski said.

The Queensland Police Service has learned from British and US intelligence agencies, examining their responses to terror attacks.

Yesterday marked one year since the Westminster Bridge terror attack in which a driver mowed down pedestrians before killing an unarmed policeman outside parliament. It was the first of five attacks last year which police blamed on terrorism. Five people were killed and some 50 were injured.

The Manchester Arena bombing, in which a bomb was detonated as people were leaving a concert by Ariana Grande, happened despite tight security in the lead up to and during the event.

“Manchester told us that it's not just good enough to secure it before the event; you've got to secure until they've all left,” he said.

Recently, 400 Queensland officers have undergone training to identify suspicious behavior – but it will be up to everyone at the Games to keep their eyes open.

“People still need to be alert that at any given time there could be people who might try it on to get through security,” he said.
