One of the two women accused of a brutal attack on an elderly blind man on a Gold Coast bus last week is a cousin of NRL star Anthony Watmough.

Larna Watmough, 21, along with her 17-year-old friend, was been charged with serious assault and public nuisance after the incident involving a 77-year-old man on a Surfside bus last week.

Watmough's father confirmed the link to the famous footballer to the media yesterday as he helped his daughter leave Southport watchhouse free on bail, the Courier Mail reports.

Her co-accused, Layni Cameron, remains behind bars after not applying for bail over the incident which sparked a huge public backlash last week when mobile phone footage went viral.

Defence lawyer Jodi Allen said the pair had received death threats.

"It is a situation where they've received death threats and other threats to their personal safety have been made against them online," Ms Allen said, arguing the backlash against the women had gone too far.

The pair will face court again on April 23.
