Independent senator Glenn Lazarus has a warning to Australians who don't back gay marriage should a referendum ever be held on the issue.

"I will turn up at parliament in a mankini," the Queensland senator told ABC radio on Thursday.

Senator Lazarus wants the public, not politicians, to decide the same-sex marriage issue because putting reform in the hands parliamentarians would be counter-productive.

"I think you should take it to a referendum, because unfortunately a lot of politicians are bound by party policy," he said.

The senator reckons most people would support gay marriage in a referendum.

"If two people love each other, whether they both have penises or vaginas, they should be allowed to be married," he said.
