A nine-year-old girl has died in hospital after being struck by a car near Lismore on the New South Wales far north coast.

Shortly before 9.30am today, the girl was hit by a Hyundai sedan travelling south on Cameron Road in McLeans Ridges, about 10 kilometres east of Lismore.

Emergency services arrived on scene and treated the girl at the scene.

She was then rushed to Lismore Base Hospital in a critical condition. She died a short time later.

The 54-year-old man driving the sedan was treated at the scene for shock and also taken to Lismore Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene has been established and forensic police are investigating.

Cameron Road is expected to remain closed for several more hours while officers from the Crash Investigate Unit continue their investigation.

A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
