A two-year-old girl is in a critical condition after nearly drowning in a backyard pool in Sydney.

The toddler was pulled from the water by her mother at a home in Seven Hills, in the city's north-west.

It is understood she was face-down in the pool for several minutes before she was found.

The girl was given CPR until a CareFlight helicopter landed in a park near the home.

CareFlight's specialist doctor and critical care paramedics intubated the girl at the scene and placed her in a medically-induced coma to stabilise her.

She was transported by road ambulance in a critical condition to The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
