A man has died after the plane he was operating crashed in Gippsland, Victoria, this afternoon.

Witness Colin Suckling told 9NEWS his grandson pointed out the plane to him moments before it crashed.

"I had my young grandson with me (who said) ‘look in the sky poppy, it’s a plane’,”" Mr Suckling said.

"It had done about four figure-eights…then next minute it straightened up, before going down into the gully and bang."

Investigations into the cause of the crash are yet to be determined, with Recreational Aviation Australia leading the probe.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Tanjil South is located about two hours from Melbourne.
