Giant 2.5m python stops Brisbane runners in their tracks

Two police officers and a Brisbane council worker have put their rescue skills to the test, after a two-and-a-half metre python slithered its way across a fence at the Howard Smith Wharves in the city’s CBD.

Council worker Luke Nisbet noticed the slippery snake sunning itself at around 2pm today while he was working.

“I’m a garbage truck driver and was going to get a bin when I saw the snake,” Mr Nisbet told 9news.com.au.

“I’ve seen the snake before, it’s a bit of a local.”

Mr Nisbet enlisted the help of a couple of police officers who were in the area at the time to try and coax the python out.

“He was on top of the fence and wouldn’t get down, he was sunning himself … and scaring the hell out of a lot of different runners going by.

“The initial response was quite intense, there were maybe 30 people around taking photos of it and it was getting quite aggressive and actually had a go at a couple of guys.

“I’ve never seen people run so fast when they saw it!”

Video showed the officers gently move the snake off the fence and onto the footpath, where it then slithered back into the nearby rocks.

“The (policemen) did a great job and I just thought that was wonderful,” Mr Nisbet said.
