Convicted Cardinal George Pell's prison cellmates revealed

UPDATE: On 7 April 2020, the High Court overturned Cardinal George Pell's conviction for historic child sex offences and acquitted him of the charges. The High Court unanimously found Victoria's Court of Appeal should not have upheld Pell's conviction and that the evidence could not support a guilty verdict.

Cardinal George Pell’s cellmates have been revealed.

The convicted Cardinal is being held at the Melbourne Assessment Prison in a cell beside Bourke Street killer, James Gargasoulas, who was jailed for life last month for killing six people and injuring 27 others when he drove his car through Melbourne's CBD in 2017.

The Eriklioglu brothers who are accused of plotting an Islamic State inspired attack in Melbourne are also nearby.

Pell is in protective custody which means he spends 23 hours a day locked in a cell.

According to a report, one of his cell neighbours, Gargasoulas, is far from a model prisoner. He reportedly has been menacing the others and is a constant agitator.

However it’s only a temporary prison for Pell. A permanent prison has not yet been assigned.

The Hopkins Correctional Centre in Ararat, which is the state's most notorious jail for sex offenders, looks like where the cardinal could be expected to go.

He would be expected to complete a sex offenders program.

Pell was found guilty of sexually assaulting two 13-year-old choir boys in 1996 when he was Melbourne Archbishop.

He is serving a six year jail term. 

He has lodged an appeal which will be will be heard on June 5.
