Gel blaster protesters determined to challenge 'firearm' ruling in South Australia

Gel blasters have been ruled to count as firearms in South Australia, and aficionados aren't happy.

Protesters outside police headquarters pleaded for their case to be heard today.

They say businesses will be left devastated by the government's decision.

The crackdown means owners and retailers will need new licences, resulting in dozens of stores across the state closing their doors immediately.

"It's ended everything," business owner Daniel Scovell told 9News.

"I've left a full-time job to come here and work, and work in something I love."

South Australia Small Business Commissioner John Chapman is calling for compensation for those who have been hit hard.

"The government needs to have a serious look at how it can compensate these businesses for its actions," he said.

"Its actions have harmed small business."

Premier Steven Marshall said safety came first, saying the decision had come to the government from police.

Employees face the difficult task of applying for a firearms licence.

And gel blaster use is now restricted to registered paintball facilities.

"There is no likelihood of the decision being reversed," Police Commissioner Grant Stephens said.

The gel blaster community has so far raised $8000 to challenge the decision in court.

"We are going to fight it in any way we can," Mr Scovell said.
