With the coronavirus keeping many Australians off public transport, more and more people are relying on their cars to get around – but it can get expensive.

The difference between the most expensive and the cheapest fuel can be staggering.

A million Australians have downloaded the Fuel Check app to try to counter any hefty prices.

The data it has collected shows a staggering price difference between petrol stations along Sydney's major roads.

"It means people can do a 10-second check before they get in the car, and save 40 cents a litre if they fill up at the right service station," the NRMA's Peter Khoury said.

Based on the average price of fuel since January, the cheapest along Anzac Parade is at Budget in Matraville, at 124.6c/L.

The dearest is at Coles Express in Pagewood, at 128.5c/L – an average of nearly 4c/L more.

And the price gap only widens in Sydney's west, with a 13.3c/L difference between Homebush (117.2C/L) and Coles Express Strathfield (130.5c/L) on the M4.

In Sydney's south-west, the difference widens to 16.5c/L between the Metro Milperra (111.5c/L) off the M5, and the Coles Express at Wattle Grove (128c/L).
