Melbourne drivers facing near-record fuel prices as end of excise bites

Melbourne motorists are copping near-record fuel prices at bowsers across the city - and the surge isn't expected to fade anytime soon.

Some petrol stations across Melbourne have prices nudging $2.40 a litre, but there are cheaper alternatives.

There are multiple factors behind the price increase, including the end of the fuel excise beginning to bite.

Additionally, there was a reduction in international oil production last month, and issues at some refineries.

All of it has combined to push prices up.

The RACV says the price for unleaded is now averaging about $1.90 a litre.

People are urged to shop around and make use of fuel comparison apps to find less expensive options.

As of late yesterday in Melbourne there were still some servos offering a fill-up at $1.80 a litre.
