Man in hotel quarantine getting information from media, not authorities

A man in Victoria's new look quarantine system says communication from authorities has been "ridiculous".

Taymour Nabulsi flew into Melbourne from Sydney on Saturday, on a flight carrying two German travellers who skipped quarantine in New South Wales.

"I took a flight from Sydney to Melbourne on Saturday, which I had planned for some time ... got off the plane, no issues, there wasn't anyone there in terms of airport staff to greet anyone. I just grabbed my luggage took off," Mr Nabulsi said.

The Sydney local said later that night he came across a news article that said anyone on that particular Virgin flight must self-quarantine immediately, but he had not heard anything from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

"I happened to be browsing a news website, I came across an article ... I didn't know about it until I clicked on the link. It wasn't until almost 1am when I got an SMS getting the same advice," he said.

"It's quite ridiculous that you can't actually get a direct response from those who are responsible, rather than it coming from the media.

"I would have thought that given the urgency of the matter, that I would be contacted directly before coming across the article."

Mr Nabulsi said he received a phone call from the DHHS last night advising him that he is unauthorised to leave the premises where he is currently staying.

"I am also unauthorised to board a flight to return home to Sydney, which in the immediate future is a problem," he said.

"I have contacted a couple of phone numbers ... each number loops to another one."

Mr Nabulsi said all of his information regarding the international travellers was coming from the media and not authorities.

The pair, believed to be a German woman, 53, and her 15-year-old son, landed in Sydney from Tokyo on Saturday.

Today the DHHS said they had returned negative test results and the results of their second tests would be available soon.

"The travellers have already returned negative results to tests that were taken on Saturday and will remain in mandatory quarantine for 14 days. They will be tested again on day 11 of their quarantine," a statement from the department read.

Mr Nabulsi has booked two flights home, one tonight and one tomorrow night, and in the meantime says he is sitting in limbo wondering what's next.
